The Q-Monad — Four Properties of a Decision-Making Subject
The Q-Monad treats any entity - individual, organisation, or system - as a decision-making subject constituted by four properties. Position on the DIKI Ladder
Decisional capability locates the entity on the Data → Information → Knowledge → Intelligence progression. The ladder is not about how much an entity knows, but about how much it can autonomously decide - the Q-Monad reading of the IBE transition. The composite score places the marker.

The construct
The Q-Monad is THE Q AGENCY's foundational unit of analysis: the entity considered strictly as a locus of decision. Adapted from a Leibnizian intuition but operationalised for organisational assessment, it holds that any subject capable of high-stakes decision - the entities that populate the quaternary and quinary sectors - can be evaluated uniformly through four constitutive properties.
The four properties
- Decisional indivisibility (Decisional indivisibility) - the entity decides as one; authority is not fragmented to the point where no locus of decision remains.
- Operational closure (Operational closure) - the entity acts on its own account, its operations forming a self-maintaining whole rather than a pass-through for others' decisions.
- Internal reflection on reality (Internal reflection on reality) - the entity models its environment internally and adjusts, rather than merely reacting to external instruction.
- Responsibility for consequences (Responsibility for consequences) - the entity bears, and internalises, the outcomes of its decisions.
Composition & integrity
The composite score is the mean of the four properties, penalised for imbalance: a monad is only as sound as its weakest constitutive seam, so a low minimum drags the whole. The integrity test flags hollowing - when one property collapses while others remain high, the entity presents as a decision-maker but has surrendered one of the conditions that make it one (a captured institution retains closure and reflection but loses indivisibility; a pass-through vehicle retains form but loses closure and responsibility).
Relation to the suite
Q-Monad is the micro, firm-level counterpart to Q-Complexity's macro, national view: what ECI and the DIKI ladder measure for an economy, the four properties measure for a single decision-making subject.
